Seattle Masonry Contractors

The Art of Seattle Masonry:

Seattle Masonry is the art of building structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar. While most people associate bricks with masonry, there are many other materials used in masonry construction including marble, granite, travertine, limestone, concrete and glass block, stucco, and tile. Masonry is considered a skilled trade and dates back as far as the Middle Ages.

The History of Seattle Masonry:

Seattle masonryThe term “Freemason” was first established in the 5th Century in England. Men that had extraordinary skills with stone were hired by the royal family to erect castles throughout the country. Masons were “free agents” much like modern sub-contractors are today. Like modern sub-contractors, early masons didn’t have workman’s compensation or life insurance to provide for injured workers or the families of workers who died on the job. As a result, they quickly saw a need to organize unions called “lodges” in order to take care of the middle and lower class. These lodges were formed to provide food, shelter, and protection for masons and their families and created a sense of community for the tradesmen. Masonry eventually made its way to the American colonies in the early 1700s changing the face of America with more durable residential and commercial structures made from stone and brick. In 1787, the Constitution was created to govern the American colonies and declare equal rights for all people regardless of their “class”. With a deep commitment to family and community, it’s no surprise 13 of the 39 signers of the Constitution were masons.

The Impact of Seattle Masonry:

The development of Masonry literally changed the structure of the world and can be attributed to everything from beautiful castles built in the Middle Ages to the modern brick homes we live in today. Mason lodges have a rich history in brotherhood providing structural and financial support to their communities for over 1,500 years here in the United States and throughout the world.
